Violeta Parra pioneered the "Chilean New Song" movement which brought back many classics. She contributed more about the social life of Chile as she wrote about a good life and the opportunity that is in front of the Chileans. This was ironic because she died by suicide, so even though she wrote about hope, she herself couldn't find her internal happiness.
VĂctor Jara was a singer who was influenced by Violeta Parra. He helped to elect Salvador Allende and wrote in order to help him get better publicity and reputation. Jara was very into politics as he was a main contributor to the elections results and solely wrote about the presidency. Unfortunately, Jara was killed due to this huge part he had in politics by the coup to follow Allende's presidency.
Los Prisioneros is a punk/rock band who wrote songs that were very political and were meant to strike up conversations. They wrote about the Pinochet regime and lashed out against all of his laws that they found to be unjust. This band was often used for protestors as they really raised awareness and had a powerful meaning behind each song.
Ana Tijoux is a hip-hop artist who has personally been impacted by Pinchets regime because her family now lives in France after fleeing from the dictatorship. In her interview she explains how the United States is the reason for the dictatorship in her country. But she also explains how her family and the way she grew up is why she is a strong feminist who wants to inspire people through her work. Her music responds to politics and social realities is how she explains in her songs to reflect how she doesn't want to go back to this opposed nation, rather she wants peace. She explains that all music in some way is political, not just hers. But, she believes that all music should be about love and that will automatically be political in some way because they are all so connected and rooted within one another.
I think that these artists and groups are essential for Chilean culture because they really express what many are feeling. By these groups creating music that represents that, people can feel connected and help to promote their opinions by supporting these musicians. I also think that any culture revolves around music because of its power and versatility, so Chile is no different in how people use the power of music to relate to one another and speak up. A few questions would be just specifics about the songs and all of the musicians intentions while writing them, but also, any other ways that are used to speak up socially and politically?
