Going into this trip I am feeling all sorts of emotions. I am really excited to be in Chile and out of the States, also being able to experience the world beyond myself really excites me. I am also excited for staying with a host family and really getting a sense of the Chilean culture. However, I am pretty nervous to be somewhere that I don't speak their language well, and on top of that definitely don't know all their slang. Additionally I am a pretty picky eater so I think I am nervous to try some of the foods while I am there that are unfamiliar.
According to the videos, Dino touched on 10 slang terms in each video that are commonly used in Chile. Dino takes the phrases and words and describes how they are used in the Chilean language and in what context you should use them or may hear them being used. While interpreting what he says, he goes over them well so that he emphasizes the tools necessary to successfully interact with our host families and those we may encounter. I found these videos interesting and fun because I never really knew that there was so much diversity in the dialects so it will be something to remain aware of. I also liked how Dino repeated the words so that I can better learn them and hopefully have the opportunity to use them while in Chile.
When teaching my family, my brother and mom seemed to have little trouble picking up on words, while my dad was definitely the entertainment of the bunch. My mom and brother are both fairly proficient in Spanish and have had the opportunity to travel and hear some of these slang terms, while my dad has not been taught Spanish a day in his life. He struggles to roll his "r" and for the most part didn't get any part of the words right because he was too busy laughing. To say the least, teaching my family was entertaining but also made me realize how hard it is to teach a language to someone who has no background in it.

  1. Once I started paying attention I saw pieces of the slang and the body language that are very common and different that other cultures in Spanish speaking countries.
